Management
John Webley, CEO and Director
—founded and held various executive positions at Advanced Fibre Communications, including VP of Marketing, VP of R&D, and CTO. With his two co-founders, they grew Advanced Fibre to 300 people and a market capitalization of $6 billion. John left to found Turin Networks, an optical networking company. Six years later, when he retired as CEO, Turin was a $50 million business with 250+ employees. John continues as chairman of Turin's board through their anticipated IPO. Since retiring from Turin, he has been involved in a board capacity with numerous startups, including Red Condor, Clovis, Securetrack, and myJambi.
Jay Harman, co-founder, Chief Inventor, and Chairman
—has developed a number of successful companies. As founder and CEO of ERG Australia Ltd, he took the company to a highly lucrative IPO. ERG went on to become one of Australia's leading technology companies. Jay has extensive experience in technology licensing and is the author of numerous patents. He is the CEO of PAX Scientific and PAX Water Technologies.
Francesca Bertone, co-founder, Chief Operating Officer, and Director
—has over 20 years of experience in operations, program administration, and education. Before founding PAX Scientific, PAX Streamline's parent company, she served as director of operations for Tank & Pipe Welding Pty Ltd in Australia. Francesca started her career in the California public school system, serving as a teacher, vice principal, and school board member.
Laura Bertone, Chief Financial Officer
—joined the PAX family of companies following 18 years in the banking industry. She is a Chartered Bank Auditor and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors. During her tenure as a corporate auditor with Bank of America, Laura managed the Global Capital Markets/Investment Banking Group, Retail Audit Group, and Development and Training Teams.
Michael May, Vice President of Engineering
—served as engineering director at Carrier Corporation in both the commercial refrigeration NA and global bus engineering divisions; in each case he was responsible for new product development. At UT Power, he led the automotive cell stack engineering team in developing a new fuel cell power section for Nissan; he also served as engineering business manager. During his 14 years at Pratt & Whitney, he participated in the development of the F119 and JSF fighter engines.
Thomas Gielda, PhD, Vice President of Advanced Research
—has held technical leadership positions in aerospace, automotive, and consumer appliances. Before coming to PAX, he was the global mechanical systems director for Whirlpool Corporation, where he led a team of 600+ responsible for new product development and product innovation. Prior to Whirlpool, Tom was a distinguished technical fellow for Visteon/Ford.
Kasey Arnold-Ince, Director of Communications
—has helped a number of clients define their identity and communicate their message, including IBM, Samsung, Mattel, Stanford's Martin Luther King Papers Project, NASA Moffett/Ames, the Great Place to Work Institute, and the Exploratorium. Previously, Kasey was Communications Manager for Arkenstone, industry leader in assistive technology. She previously worked for PAX Streamline's parent company, PAX Scientific.
—was a co-founder of Daisy Systems and founding Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems where he pioneered open systems and commercial RISC processors. Vinod serves on the boards of Ausra, eASIC, Spatial Photonics, and Xsigo. In 1986, Vinod joined Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers (KPCB), the funding company for Sun. Driven by the need for flexibility and a desire to be more experimental, to fund sometimes imprudent "science experiments", and to take on both "for profit" and for "social impact" ventures, he formed Khosla Ventures in 2004. He was joined in 2006 by general partners David Weiden and Samir Kaul, as well as chief scientific officer Doug Cameron. Based in Menlo Park, California, Khosla Ventures focuses on both traditional venture capital technology investments and clean technology ventures. The firm's capital comes entirely from its own partners and a portion of all profits are donated to charitable causes, with an emphasis on micro-finance and affordable housing.
Ford Tamer, Director
—is an operating partner at Khosla Ventures where he is focusing on breakthroughs in mechanical and electrical efficiency, solar, and IT. Ford is on the board of EcoMotors, Kaai, Soraa, Topanga, and eASIC. Before joining Khosla Ventures, Ford was senior vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Networking Group at Broadcom, where he grew the networking semiconductor business four-fold to lead market share at tier one customers worldwide. Ford has over 20 years' experience founding and building successful technology businesses. He co-founded and served as the president and CEO of Agere, Inc., a semiconductor manufacturer, until it was acquired by Lucent Microelectronics. Following the acquisition, he served as vice president of the Processing, Aggregation and Switching business unit at Lucent's Agere Systems. Prior to founding Agere, he was part of the founding executive team at Dazel Corporation, which was acquired by HP, and MegaKnowledge, which was acquired by IntelliCorp.
